Mama's bathroom refresh

My mom has been in love with the floating shelves in my bathroom for a while now and she's been begging me to come help her put some in her own bathroom, so this past weekend I ran over there with 3 stained [Minwax English Chestnut with a white wash finish after] pieces of 1x6x15" and some metal L shaped brackets. After clearing out the art she had there previously here's what we were working with...

We eyeballed the spacing and used a level to get them straight. We didnt want to deal with finding studs so we just picked up some cheap anchors from Lowes and screwed up each shelf into those. We used accessories she already had and printed some vintage advertisements for the frames. After staging them we ended with it looking like this...

Shes really happy with it and even thought they don't serve much of a purpose like mine did for me they sure are pretty. Next up is that blank wall directly across, I'm thinking a rustic "bath" sign? Next time!

Black doors everyyyyy where

I'm quick with projects. Like, I can plan a project, shop, paint and accessorize in a week. Okay, that's an exaggeration. A month. The one exception is the black doors. Ohhhh the black doors. If you remember, I painted "all" the doors in my house black this summer, but I didn't really do all of them exactly. I sorta only did the ones people would see on the daily and just left the ones in our master bathroom because, well, there's three freaking doors in our bathroom. THREE doors. That's SIX panels to paint. I put it off long enough though and I knew if I wanted to ever really call my master bedroom FINISHED I'd need to tackle those doors. Here's what we were working with....

and after I started on the front sides....

the finished project....

I always say that painting your doors is the most time consuming, most rewarding project you can do. It takes absolutely for EVER but it's totally worth it in the end because they look so rich and custom. No one else in the neighborhood is gonna have them that's for sure. [probably because they don't have the time to paint on three coats front and back of 14 doors but that's beside the point] Any projects you finished that you felt the same way about? Tell me all about!

Not working out

I like to think that I'm not a wasteful person, but if something just doesn't work for me I am not above changing it out for something that DOES work. Case in point, the man cave.

Zack had been begging me to give him a "media room" for a while. He said he needed a place to go chill out, watch movies, play video games etc. It took a lot of persuading but I finally caved and we got started on what we would end up calling the man cave. We painted, got a new rug and TV [and a new cable box], moved all the video game consoles upstairs along with our old love seat and brought in some accessories. Awesome, right? Wrong. I can count on one hand the number of times that man has gone into that room and hung out.

Then, on Black Friday we picked up a new TV [a 32" for our room] but agreed we wouldn't get another cable box because 1. it seemed like overkill having cable in 2 rooms less than 3 yards from each other and 2. the bill goes up significantly with each box, but after a couple weeks we realized that we really enjoyed watching TV in bed and we wanted cable in there. We didn't want to take the cable away from downstairs since that's mostly the place we hang out, so the only option was to take the cable from the man cave. In doing that it completely removed the purpose of that room. Basically without the cable there's no reason we would go watch TV in there at all.

I was feeling defeated, seeing this room that I made all pretty go to waste, then Zack just said, "Hey, lets just eliminate the man cave all together and do a functional office/work space in there." I was hesitant at first, but in all honesty it just doesn't make sense to keep the room decorated and gathering dust. This new plan will make the room a useful space so reluctantly, I am on board.

Right away, Zack took the new TV out of the man cave and put it in the living room down stairs, took the TV from downstairs and put it in our room and put the small TV that we bought for our room into the guest room. whew. Did you follow all that? I hope so.

Now, we are going through most of whats in the room and figuring out if we want to keep it, sell it, give it away etc, and in the meantime I think I've come up with a plan, here goes nothing....

First things first, we will change out the blue paint for the light grey we used in the rest of the room to give it a cohesive look.

Next, we'll  turn my current desk area into Zack's scale model area by adding a shelf above the desk to keep his paints organized. We we also be moving his military art over here so that he can still enjoy it.

After that, we'll build a L-shaped desk coming out from the side wall wrapping into the center of the room, this will be my work space. One side will hold my computer and printer while the other will be open for project space.

Lastly, we'll change the curtains to something darker, get new covers for our desk chairs and add in some functional accessories to complete the look.

This one's definitely going to take us a little while but in the end I know this is going to be the best solution for us. I know it seems like we wasted time and money, which we did, but sometimes you just have to admit that it was a fail, move on and create something even better. I'm hoping that this was a lesson in DIY and we learn to better plan for what functions a room will actually serve BEFORE we go all out on remodeling it. We hope that you appreciate our honesty and would love to hear your suggestions for this room if you have any!

Master Bedroom: Phase II plans

We "finished" the master bedroom earlier this year and while we are still happy with how it turned out, we really didn't do much to the actual room its self because we just added new furniture and accessories. So, next year we're going to go all the way and really finish. My plan is simple, create some kind of texture on the wall either with planks like this one from Table and Hearth

or panels like this from my favorite blogger, Jenna Sue Design.

The other thing, we're going dark! We plan to used Valspar Ocean Storm like we used on the laundry room. I'm not sure if we will do the whole room this color as it might make it too dark, or if we will just do the wall with the headboard and paint the rest of the room in Valspar Frappe or reverse and do 3 walls Ocean Storm and 1 wall Frappe. Decisions, decisions.

Next, we'll change out the curtains to something nicer, possibly these from Ikea, paint the bathroom doors, create a rustic wood frame for the mirror over the dresser and change out the ceiling fan to the same one in the guest room and man cave. Here's the visual

Here's what it looks like now.

[Sorry for the crappy phone photos. It was dark when I took them and my phone sucks.]

The power of paint is amazing and Im telling you this room is going to transform with it! I also may change the duvet and shams, I might also change the bench and headboard to something more simple because I'm feeling like its too light for my style and want to go more cabin/rustic than airy farmhouse. This is what I'm thinking...

I'm planning to re-use as much I can and just re purpose it, like the headboard. I will reuse the frame and padding and just remove the tufting and nail head for something simpler. The bench should be easy because Ill just remove the padding and place a piece of wood on top instead of recovering it. All the other things are small things I can replace on the cheap. We'll see.

We are hoping to get started just after the holidays. Anyone else have DIY plans for the new year? Tell me all about it in the comments!

Colorado Vintage Markets

For all you locals or maybe just adventurous neighbors looking for a fun road trip, I've complied a list of the awesome vintage markets coming up in 2017! There's quite a few so I know that it can be confusing as to which are the best so I'm also going to throw in a quick review of the ones I've been to, what you can expect, address, dates and entrance fees. Lets get started!

1. Old House Vintage Market
January 13-14
5280 Arena Cir, Loveland, CO 80538
Friday 5-9 $15
Saturday all day $4

*Haven't been to this one yet!

2. Rebel Junk
February 24-25
5280 Arena Cir, Unit 100, Loveland, Colorado 80538
Friday 6pm-9pm $15
Saturday 10am-4pm $7

*Haven't been to this one yet!

3. Vintage Whites
March 31- April 1
4655 Humboldt St, Denver, CO 80216
*tickets not yet available but last year it was
Friday 5pm-9pm $30
Saturday $6 pre-ordered tickets $7 at the door

*Absolutely my favorite market hands down. They had the best vendors, the MOST vendors and pretty affordable stuff. I can say, its the busiest market I've been to. I went on Saturday [didn't want to pay the $30] and I could barely walk. There were so many people there, you waited in LINES to get into each booth. My friends mom paid the $30 and went Friday night. She said there was no one there and it was easy to shop. I think that's probably what Ill do this year.

4. Vintage Market Days -North Central Colorado
1209 Manford Ave, Estes Park, CO 80517
May 19-21
Friday-10am-5pm $10
Saturday 10am-5pm $5
Sunday 10am-4pm $5

*purchasing the $10 ticket gets you in all 3 days
*Haven't been to this one and probably wont since its quite far from my house.

5. Vintage Market Days- Colorado Springs
June 23-25
1045 Lower Gold Camp Rd, Colorado Springs, CO
friday 10am-5pm $10
Saturday and Sunday 10am-5pm $5

*purchasing the $10 ticket gets you in all 3 days
*Haven't attended the one in the Springs but I went to the Pueblo one this year and it was cool. Very small but still really cool. Lots of great farmhouse decor to choose from and awesome prices. Lines weren't long at all.

6.Vintage Market Days- Central Denver
500 Fairgrounds Rd, Castle Rock, CO
August 25-27
Friday 10am-5pm $10
Saturday and Sunday 10am-5pm $5

*purchasing the $10 ticket gets you in all 3 days
*This one is probably my least favorite, when my friends and I went this year there were some great items but there were also a lot of really odd things too. Basically, there were a lot of "vendors" there that had actually just bought a cheap piece of wood from Hobby Lobby and smudged a cheap stencil on it and they were selling it for high prices. I wish they had been more selective about the vendors they allowed because it felt like a waste of money when there were only a couple cute booths. I will probably check it out again this year just because, but my expectations will be low.

Hope this helps and if you know of any others that I haven't mentioned please leave the info in the comments and I'll add it to the list! Happy Holidays!

Jackie
