DIY China Cabinet Makeover

Now that I've started to transition back into the farmhouse style I have been trying to make better decisions about the things I'm purchasing. I'm trying to slow myself down and find the right pieces rather than placeholders and while it's taking longer to get the house where I want it, its making me much more happy about the changes that have been made. Case in point, this wall.

This is the side of the staircase. You can see this big blank wall from the entry, dining and kitchen. I've tried several attempts to make this area feel like part of the house but it just hasn't worked out well for me.

I have been coming across these amazing photos of china cabinets on Pinterest and Instagram and thought it would be a great piece to fill up that wall and bring some charm to the space.

This is actually my exact same cabinet!

I set out to find one, but it had to be perfect. I didn't want to just buy anything. I checked FB marketplace daily, went to antique stores and thrift shops, searched Craigslist, Offer Up and Let Go to no avail. Then, my mom made a visit and asked if we could check out a thrift shop down the street that I had taken her to before. We start looking at the furniture and there's this big clunky china cabinet. We check it out but ultimately decide its too big and ornate for my taste. We turn to leave and bam! There's this gorgeous (albeit very dirty) china cabinet. Simple, narrow and marked down from $159.99 to $59.99.

I bought it, rented a Uhaul pickup truck and got that baby home within the hour.

It was full of dust, cobwebs and grime but nothing a little vacuuming, spider spray and elbow grease couldn't fix. The only issue I found was the glass. I hadn't noticed it in the store but the glass had these streaks down them and no amount of cleaning or scraping could get it off. Ultimately, I just had to remove it. Eventually, Ill replace it but for now I've just left it open and it looks just as nice.

After everything was cleaned and the knobs were all removed I gave it a quick sanding with my Mouse sander and did a thin coat of black primer spray paint. Once the primer dried I rolled on 2 coats of black paint I had leftover from my dresser project.

I reattached the drawer pulls and grabbed some cheap antiqued brass knobs from Hobby Lobby 50% off and moved that baby in the house.

I dont have any fancy china, Im thinking I may start collecting antique dishes from various thrift and antique shops eventually but for now, Its filled with the treasures I want to show off and I'm really happy with it.
